YAY!
I got in!
...to an undisclosed graduate program.
Dude.  Yay.
Studying for the next four weeks is going to be so difficult.
That is all.

Amendment 9/27/2010: Holy crap on a cracker!  It's paid for as well.  My research assistantship was upgraded from half to full.  It's like I'm an adult.  How weird is that?

Rating: R (for drug use!)
Pairing: Holmes/Watson
Summary: Holmes conducts a rather silly experiment on himself.  Watson sticks around to see him through.
Author's Note:  At some point this was hit with a beta stick by
lady_carfax But, she isn't at fault if this is full of errors.  I went back and edited again after she poked it.  Also, I'm not sure if there are going to be chapters preceding and following this or if it will be a stand alone.

Which is precisely why I only ate half.Collapse )

Today, joy of joys, the After Dark Film Festival opens. As usual they have more duds than interesting films.  But, I'm still excited.  In fact, I thought I would write down all of the horror movies I watched over the past six months.  Turns out I've been watching more than one a week and am rather partial to films about ghosts (with a spattering of vampires and zombies for good measure)...

America:

The Abandoned (2006) **
The Hamiltons (2006) *** All in all a very interesting vampire film.  It could have been better.  The characters were flat and the acting was so-so.
Unrest (2006) *

Sweden:

Let the Right One In (2009) **** One of the most unique vampire movies I have seen.  Beautifully shot.  The children do a wonderful job acting.

Spain:

The Orphanage (2007) ***

Germany:

Requiem (2006) **** Thought provoking film about a girl who thinks she is demonically possessed.  Recommended for fellow psych nerds.

Norway:

Dead Snow (2009) **** Hilariously offensive.  Campy.  Very well choreographed fight scenes.  Summed up in two words: Nazi zombies.
Hidden (2010)

China:

The Eye (2002) ***
The Eye II (2004)**** For God knows what reason, this will always remain one of my favorite horror films even though it is, in a few words, the Buddhist version of The Sixth Sense.
The Eye Infinity (?) **
Three Extremes (2000) **** The dreamlike short The Box was incredible: no gore just incredible imagery and a strange, warped sort of sadness.  I could say the same about Dumplings.  Both draw heavily on folklore.
Three Extremes II (2002)**** Three stunning short films.  Memories is the only twenty minutes long and actually me sob like a baby.  Maybe I'm twisted but, I think it was a breathtaking love story.  Really, horror or not, it is one of my favorite films.

Taiwan:

Silk (2006)**

Japan:

Audition (1999)***
Blood: The Last Vampire (2000) ***
Guinea Pig Series 1: The Devil's Experiment (1985) **
Guinea Pig Series 2: Flowers of Flesh and Blood (1985) *** A fake snuff film.  Disgustingly gory.  Interesting simply for its historical value.
Hausu (1977) **** Extraordinarily campy.  The film was based on things the director's 7 year-old daughter said.
JU-ON: The Curse (2000) ***
JU-ON: The Curse II (2000) ***
JU-ON: Shiroi Roujo (2009) **
JU-ON: Girl in Black (2009)
Noroi the Curse (2005) **** Love me some ancient demons and ESP.  Slow at first but all told a very unsettling mocumentary.  The last scene will, most likely, haunt me forever.
Premonition (2004) ****
Reincarnation (Rinne) (2005) **** I think I have a thing for ghost movies involving reincarnation.  This one is predictable.  But, it gets four stars for the ending sequence.  I was terrified.
Ring Series: The Ring (Ringu) (1998) **
Ring Series: Rasen (1998) *
Ring Series: Ring 0: Birthday (2000) *
Uzumaki (2000) **

Korea:

A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)**** Again, beautifully shot.  Delicious plot twists.  Very sad.
Cello (2005)
The Red Shoes (2005)

Thailand:

Shutter (2004)**** Love.  This.  Film.  An interesting twist on the 'technology' trope and a great take on the motivation behind hauntings.
